Gothic/dark metal da Tolosa: ULVAND (Intervista)

Un ep che dura più di mezz'ora da parte di una band francese che al suo esordio sorprende per freschezza compositiva, classe e cura di ogni dettaglio della propria proposta. Non lasciatevi sfuggire "Origins", che farà la felicità di chi ama molto il gorhic/dark metal con doppia voce maschile/femminile!

1) Ciao ragazzi e benvenuti. Raccontateci un po' di voi facendo una breve biografia dagli inizi ad oggi!

Wilfried: Ciao e grazie per averci invitato per questa intervista. Veniamo da Tolosa in Francia. La nostra band esiste dal 2018 come Ulvånd, ma ci conosciamo da 20 anni e abbiamo già avuto altri progetti (In Lupus Pacis, Leida). Ci siamo incontrati a una festa e abbiamo sentito la scintilla. Abbiamo deciso di iniziare un nuovo progetto e produrre 2-3 titoli per divertimento, quindi abbiamo sentito la necessità di sviluppare ulteriormente il progetto. Abbiamo scelto di registrare un E.P, che sembrava il miglior formato. Ora ci stiamo preparando per eventi dal vivo, che dovranno attendere fino alla fine del blocco...

2) Quali band ti hanno ispirato e vi ispirano ancora? 

Wilfried: Le band rock-metal che mi hanno ispirato e che ascolto ancora sono Marillion, Rush, Pink Floyd, Paradise Lost, Samael, Rammstein ... Più recentemente, ho ascoltato Lana Del Rey, Rotting Christ, Mozart, Behemoth e molti altri stili. Anche altri membri della band hanno influenze molto diverse. 

3) Di cosa parlano i testi delle vostre canzoni e in particolare quelli di "Origins"? 

Serge: I testi delle nostre canzoni trattano sempre argomenti vicini a noi, e e le nostre emozioni. A volte si generano da situazioni in cui siamo stati coinvolti, o semplicemente dalle cose a cui teniamo. Una Vida, ad esempio, tocca la tragedia che colpisce il popolo siriano e la negazione della comunità internazionale. Un altro esempio è Human Zoo che onora Abraham Ulrikab, un Inuit di Labrador in Canada. Lui e la sua famiglia furono esposti in giardini zoologici umani del XIX secolo in Europa. La disperazione riguarda la sensazione di perdere qualcuno vicino, mentre The Pack, Chrysalis o 7 Virtues toccano valori umani e filosofia. In breve, la nostra gamma di ispirazione si estende ampiamente, è universale e allo stesso tempo molto intima. 

4) Vogliamo descrivere il processo compositivo del vostro nuovo album? Quanto tempo ci è voluto tra la composizione e la registrazione? 

Wilfried: Parto spesso da un riff di chitarra o da una batteria che sviluppo; Applico quindi una linea di basso e aggiungo accordi e / o suoni elettro. Successivamente, lo presento agli altri. Una volta che un pezzo è stato convalidato, Bérangère e Serge conferiscono uno stile di testo per abbinare la musica e chi canterà questa o quella parte. Bérangère trova quindi melodie, Serge i modelli vocali e le sue stesse linee di basso. Se necessario, lasciamo evolvere la struttura. A quel punto, passiamo agli accordi con l'aiuto di Bérangère e Serge. Ma questo non è l'unico modo in cui lavoriamo. Sono anche partito da un testo che influenza l'atmosfera e il ritmo di un brano. Ognuno riempie il proprio ruolo e noi lavoriamo bene in quel modo.

5) C'è un messaggio particolare dietro i testi del vostro nuovo album?

Serge: Non abbiamo un messaggio particolare, a parte i valori vicini ai nostri cuori sin dall'inizio, come valori umani e immagini positive come il coraggio, il sacrificio di sé e il rispetto degli altri e di se stessi. Abbiamo anche un lato oscuro, proprio come in ogni essere umano, suppongo

6) Ci sono stati cambiamenti sostanziali nel tuo suono rispetto al passato?

Wilfried: Sì, un bel po' è cambiato, dai tempi di LEIDEN, siamo solo in tre con la maggior parte degli strumenti programmati e composti su un computer (batteria, suoni elettro e strumenti classici). Vengono suonati solo il canto, le chitarre e il basso. Questo formato è il più efficiente per noi da progredire e ognuno ha un ruolo ben definito. È anche la prima volta che registro tutto da solo, nel mio studio. Ciò mi ha permesso di dedicare più tempo agli accordi e di ottenere un risultato più desiderabile. Nella nostra vecchia band Leiden, avevamo un vero batterista e altri musicisti, quindi, ovviamente, i suoni sarebbero cambiati ma il mio approccio è rimasto lo stesso: puntare a suoni generali pesanti, freddi e cupi. I miei gusti tuttavia si sono evoluti e ora preferisco registrare chitarre con un amplificatore a valvole per dare più sostanza e vita al nostro suono.

7) Di solito fate molti spettacoli dal vivo? E come descrivereste un ​​vostro concerto? Logicamente la domanda tiene conto anche dell'attuale emergenza da Coronavirus attuale...

Wilfried: Non siamo ancora stati in tour con Ulvånd, ma arriverà una volta che il blocco sarà stato rimosso. Abbiamo prodotto il 1° E.P. in marzo e stavamo provando la nostra scaletta per alcuni concerti, prima che la pandemia ci bloccasse ... Quindi, purtroppo, non posso descrivere i nostri spettacoli. Nel complesso, non possiamo fare ciò che possiamo mostrare come vorremmo perché abbiamo lavoro e famiglie. Coglieremo le migliori opportunità, ci alzeremo nelle migliori condizioni disponibili e scopriremo il nostro universo. Abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di fare un buon numero di concerti con il nostro vecchio set up, quindi non siamo nemmeno neofiti.

8) Quali sono i vostri obiettivi per un futuro più immediato? E guardando al futuro, cosa vi piacerebbe ottenere con la tua band?

Wilfried: Vorremmo tenere alcuni concerti e promuovere il nostro E.P The Origins. Queste sono le nostre priorità al momento. Stiamo anche lavorando a un progetto per il primo album, ma probabilmente ci saranno altri passaggi prima. Ne sapremo di più a breve.

1) Hi guys and welcome. Tell us a little bit about how you trained by making a short biography to date. 

Wilfried: Hi and thank you for inviting us for this interview. We come from Toulouse in France. Our band exists since 2018 as Ulvånd, but we have known each other for 20 years and we’ve had other projects before (In Lupus Pacis, Leiden). We ran into each other at a party and felt the spark. We decided to start a new project and produce 2-3 titles for fun, and then we felt the need to develop the project further. We chose to record an E.P, which seemed like the best format. We are now preparing for live events, which will have to wait until the end of the lockdown… 

2) Which bands inspired you and still inspire you? 

Wilfried: The rock-metal bands that inspired me and I still listen to are Marillion, Rush, Pink Floyd, Paradise Lost, Samael, Rammstein… More recently, I’ve been listening to Lana Del Rey, Rotting Christ, Mozart, Behemoth and many other styles. Other members of the band also have very varied influences. 

3) What are the lyrics of your songs and in particular those of your latest album? 

Serge: The lyrics of our songs always deal with topics close to home and also our emotions. They sometimes spawn from situations we’ve been in or simply things care about. Una Vida, for example touches on the tragedy that hits Syrian people and the denial of the international community. Another example is Human Zoo which honors Abraham Ulrikab, an Inuit from Labrador in Canada. He and his family were exposed in human zoos 19th century Europe. Despair is about the feeling of losing someone close, while The Pack, Chrysalis or 7 Virtues touch in human values and philosophy. In short, our array of inspiration spans vastly, is universal and at the same time, very intimate. 

4) Do we want to describe the compositional process of your new album? How long did it take between composition and recording? 

Wilfried: I often start from a guitar riff or a drum beat that I develop; I then apply a bass line and add chords and/or electro sounds. Next, I present it to the others. Once a piece has been validated, Bérangère and Serge confer on a style of text to match the music and who is going to sing this or that part. Bérangère then finds melodies, Serge the vocal patterns and his own bass lines. If need be, we let the structure evolve. At that point, we shift to arrangements with the help of Bérangère and Serge. But that is not the only way we work. I’ve also started from a text which influences the atmosphere and rhythm of a piece. Everyone fills their role and we work well that way. 

5) Is there a particular message behind the lyrics of your new album? 

Serge: We do not have one particular message, aside from the values close to our hearts since the get-go, like human values and positive images such as courage, self-sacrifice, and respect of others and of one-self. We also have a darker side, just like in every human being, I suppose 

6) Have there been any substantial changes in your sound compared to the past? 

Wilfried: Yes, quite a bit has changed, from the time of LEIDEN, It’s only three of us with a majority of instruments programmed and composed on a computer (drums, electro sounds and classical instruments). Only the singing, guitars and bass are played. This format is the most efficient for us to progress and everyone has a well-defined role. It’s also the first time I record everything myself, in my own studio. That allowed me to spend more time on arrangements and get to a more desirable result. In our old band Leiden, we had a real drummer and other musicians, so of course, the sounds would change but my approach stays the same: to Aim for a heavy general sounds, cold and somber. My taste however has evolved and I now prefer to record guitars with a tube amplifier to give more substance and life to our sound. 

7) Do you usually do many live shows? And how would you describe your concert? 

Wilfried: We have not yet been on tour with Ulvånd but that will come once the lockdown is lifted. We produced out 1st E.P in March and we were rehearsing our set list for a few concerts, before the pandemic stalled us… So sadly, I cannot describe our shows. Overall, we can’t do as may shows as we’d like because we have jobs and families. We will grab on to the best opportunities, to rise in the best conditions available and let our universe be discovered We had the opportunity to be in a good number of concerts with our old set up, so we are not newbies either. 

8) What are your goals for the more immediate future? And looking ahead, what would you like to achieve with your band? 

Wilfried: We’d like to have a few concerts and promote our E.P The Origins. These are our priorities at the moment. We are also working on a first album project but there will likely be other steps before that. We’ll know more in a few.
